Ngocvung Island
This is a land Island covering 12sq.km. and 34km. away from Baichay Tourist Wharf. It has been inhabited for a long time. Surrounding the island are many beautiful, sandy beaches. On the island is Vanxuan Mountain, 182m high. There is also an ancient village from the time of Halong Culture, which covered an area of 4,500sq.m. This was Congyen Old Port, in the trading area of Vandon in the 11th century. There are also the remains of old ramparts from the Tran and Nguyen Dynasties (17th – 18th century.)
In the past, local people used to earn their living by diving for pearls on the bed of sea. These pearls were famous for their brightness and beauty. The island was called Ngocvung, ‘the orb of pearls’. Nowadays, local people still earn their living by culturing pearls.
